About New York

New York City has been welcoming visitors since 1594, when its first European visitor, Giovanni da Verrazzano, landed upon its shores. Today, the city is home to more than 8.5 million people within its five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx, which stretch along the shores of the mighty Atlantic and the Hudson River.

Overview

New Yorkers are proud to live in the most densely populated city in the United States, and one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world.

Watch a Broadway show, eat some of the most authentic Chinese food outside of Asia, or shop for modern art or a cool sculpture in SoHo.

You’ll also find the world’s best pizza and international cuisine, great art and some terrific shops in this global fashion capital.

Visit the Museum of Modern Art or Times Square, where life imitates art on a daily basis in this oversized moving canvas known as New York.

What To Do

You’ll never get bored in this city that never sleeps.

Take in magnificent city views from the top of the Empire State Building.

Bask in the neon lights of Times Square, the bustling heart of the theatre district. There’s no better place in the world to attend a show than on Broadway.

Ferry into New York’s unique history at Ellis Island and view the iconic Statue of Liberty, standing tall in symbolic welcome to those landing on U.S. shores.

Remember the fallen at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. See the city from high atop One World Observatory at the World Trade Center campus.

Enjoy a romantic carriage ride or stroll through the city’s green oasis at Central Park.

Hail a cab, ride a bus, or head underground to the infamous New York subway.  Or walk off those extra calories from the incredible pizza and pasta, dim sum and more. If you can’t find it in New York, it probably doesn’t exist.

What To See

See where art and architecture perfectly intersect at the Statue of Liberty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, One World Observatory at the rebuilt World Trade Center, the iconic Empire State Building, or a thousand other places that make New York City so unique.

Watch some of your favorite stars light up the Great White Way during a Broadway show. Later, see a million stars illuminate the sky at the Hayden Planetarium.

Shopping

New York City is a global shopping center, around which many of the world’s star fashion designers revolve.

Start the day with breakfast, before strolling along 5th Avenue where such high-end stores as Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Prada reside. Window shopping takes on a new meaning in New York City, especially during the winter holiday season, as stores create exquisite window displays. Stop in at the world’s largest department store – Macy’s on 34th Street.

If you’re lucky enough to be in town, attend Fashion Week in Bryant Park, where, once a year, the best designers parade their vision of haute couture.

Nightlife

New York City offers some of the most exclusive spots for nightlife. Toast the town at one of the city’s rooftop bars to take in incredible views of the Manhattan skyline. Attend an evening show on or off Broadway. Cozy up and listen to jazz in the Village. Attend a symphony, the ballet or opera at the magnificent Lincoln Center. In New York, the options are endless.

Off the Beaten Path

Ride a ferry to Governors Island. Visit the historic 18th century Castle Williams and Fort Jay, or just relax and picnic on the grass and enjoy stunning views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.

Go off-off-Broadway to a show. Or take an aerial tramway to nearby Roosevelt Island.

Food and Drink

Begin your day with a freshly baked bagel and a schmear of cream cheese. Enjoy a midday snack of hot dogs, pretzels, falafel, tacos, roasted chestnuts or Italian ices from one of the local street food vendors.

Taste some New York pizza, considered by many to be the best in the world. Pasta Primavera, eggs Benedict, the Bloody Mary, the Waldorf Salad and even the ice cream cone, are all believed to originate here.

Dine in Chinatown, one of the largest outside of China, and Little Italy. Leave room for Serendipity’s $1000 golden opulence sundae or some tasty cookie dough created at a new shop in Greenwich Village. You’ll never go hungry in this city that never seems to stop eating.

New York With Kids

The American Museum of Natural History offers kids thrills galore with life-size displays of dinosaur skeletons. Visit the Hayden Planetarium for a captivating view of the universe.

Learn about art history at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with its renowned antiquities room an incredible collection of impressionism from Gauguin to Van Gogh.

Most of this city’s major attractions are kid-friendly. Go wild at the Central Park Zoo. During the winter, take your kids ice-skating at two of the world’s most famous outdoor rinks at Rockefeller Center and Central Park.

And catch the world-famous Rockettes during their spectacular holiday show at Radio City Music Hall.

When to Go

The winter holidays in New York City are magical. Be sure to book your room ahead of time, as it gets especially busy during the holidays.

Attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or watch the ball drop with a million new friends in Times Square for a New Year’s Eve to remember.

Fall is also gorgeous when the weather gets a little crisp, and the leaves burst into color . The city blooms in the spring.

Summer is long and hot, with temps climbing into the 80s F and 90s F. It’s a great time to head to one of the local beaches in Coney Island, up north to the Hamptons or along the Jersey shore.
