Portland was named after the English Isle of Portland, derived from the Old English word “Portlandia,” due to its surrounding water and historic harbor. The Port of Portland stands as one of the largest commercial seaports in the New England area and has served as a key in transport to and from Europe for centuries. Aside from its working waterfront, this historic town also carries with it a playful, unique, and communal energy. Portland brings with it an active and outdoorsy spirit, full of lush parks and hiking trails. It has also developed a strong reputation for art, music, and cuisine. Restaurants, markets, and food festivals are plentiful throughout Portland.   • The Arts District: centered on Congress Street, was designated to promote arts, culture, and community of the city.
  • Back Cove trail: a 3.5 mile walking path and loop that provides beautiful views of the harbor, it’s perfect for biking, walking, running, or just a casual stroll and a breath of fresh air.
  • Old Port: a historic district lined with cobblestone streets and old brick homes. It also serves as a community hub for gourmet dining, boutiques, bars, and pubs.
  • Portland Head Light: Portland’s oldest lighthouse, stands proudly at the entrance of the main shipping channel in the Portand Harbor.
  • Casco Bay Islands: a series of islands northeast of Portland. Peaks Island is one of the most popular with rentals such as kayaks, bikes, and golf carts to best view the island. The Casco Bay Islands can be reached via ferry. 
  • East End Beach: This is the only public beach in Portland. Enjoy a day in the sun, water, and taking in the views.

Portland often has a climate high in humidity, with long and cold winters. Winters hit below 0 temperatures on average. Nor’easters can also be expected throughout the winter months, with high winds and snowfall. Therefore, The Summer months, May-September, are an excellent time to go. The weather is warmer, highs hitting the 80’s on average, and the festivals are abundant. There are several music, wine, and food festivals that occur within the summer season. June-August months offer moderate, longer days, with more sunlight.
