Overview
Mackinac Island State Park, Michigan’s first state park, comprises more than 80 percent of the island and is home to Fort Mackinac and Fort Holmes. Other must-see sights on car-free Mackinac Island, which can be discovered on foot or by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage, include the Michigan Governor’s Summer Residence, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and downtown Mackinac, home to a number of historic homes and businesses.
What to see
The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum – Located in the historic Indian Dormitory building, this diverse museum exhibits fine and decorative arts inspired by Mackinac Island through the ages, including hand-beaded Native American garments, 17th- and 18th-century maps, Mackinac photography, and more.
Original Murdick’s Fudge – Mackinac Island is famous for fudge and there is no shortage of places to find this delectable treat, including Original Murdick’s Fudge which has been in business since 1887.
Mackinac Island State Park – The history of the island comes alive at Mackinac Island State Park. The park is home to the historic Biddle House, where you will also find the Mackinac Island Native American Museum; Fort Mackinac, which was founded during the American Revolution and served as a home for soldiers and their families; Fort Holmes, a wood and earthen fort that was built by British soldiers in 1814 during the War of 1812; and Arch Rock, which stands nearly 15 stories tall and is the most iconic geological landmark on the island.
