Explore Georgia

Overview

Wander along Savannah’s cobblestone streets, past historic mansions and lively squares, and moss-draped oak trees.  Explore the city as memorialized by John Berendt in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Bask in the sunshine at Tybee Island.  And get swept up in the warmth of Southern hospitality as few other cities know how to dish it out.

What To Do

Many historic homes are open to visitors, including the Isaiah Davenport House, an elegant Federal-Style home dating back to the 1820s.  The impending demolition of the building in the 1950s led to the formation of the Historic Savannah Foundation, whose primary goal is the preservation of the city’s architectural heritage.

Monterey Square is a standout among the city’s many elegant squares. At its center stands a monument honoring General Casimir Pulaski, who was killed during the Siege of Savannah in 1779. Among the many stately buildings bordering the square is the Mercer-Williams House, known both for its meticulous restoration and for its notoriety as the site of multiple mysterious deaths including a murder recounted in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”

For those with a taste for the paranormal, Savannah has also earned itself the reputation as one of the most haunted cities in America.  From the eerie pathways and that wind along the Bonaventure Cemetery to the converted River Street warehouses that housed slaves, you’ll find the spirits of the past echo through the city.

Tour the civil war bastions of Old Fort Jackson and Fort Pulaski.

Art aficionados will enjoy the Telfair Academy and the SCAD Museum of Art as well as the city’s robust collection of art galleries and boutiques. The famous Bird Girl statue, once a centerpiece at the Bonaventure Cemetry, is now on display at the Telfair Academy.

If you’re planning a trip in the springtime, the city’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are worth experiencing. The renowned Savannah Music Festival also takes place in the spring and draws performers and visitors from near and far.

Savannah serves up a vibrant mix of Lowcountry cuisine and global influences to satisfy even the most discerning palate.

When to Go

Savannah is a year-round vacation destination, but is best in the spring and fall, when the weather is warm and dry. The subtropical climate produces weather that ranges from mild in the winter, through pleasantly warm in spring and fall months, to humid and hot in summer.

Spring and fall is typically the best weather, when it is warm without being too hot, and rainfall is at its lowest. Savannah is a city best seen on foot, making this time of year the most pleasant to enjoy the city.

Springtime is the best to visit Savannah, when the warm temperatures range from the 70s to 80s. Visit in late March to early April, when the azaleas and other shrubs, and flowering trees are at their peak.

Winter tends to be the off-season as the weather cools down to low 60s and low 40s.
