Overview

The Motown Museum provides a glimpse into Berry Gordy’s famed Motown Records, where such musical icons as Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder recorded many of their hits.

During the spring, summer, and fall, food trucks vend some of the freshest fares in The D. Detroit’s myriad downtown neighborhoods also serve up a range of local craft beers and tasty cuisine along the riverfront and beyond.

Lady Luck awaits at three Las Vegas-style casinos. There are also innovative theatres, enlightening museums, and three sports stadiums. In fact, Detroit’s marvelous theater district is the second largest in the country, next to New York City.

Lovely Lake St. Clair straddles the upper east side of Detroit, with plenty of bicycle paths, shops, and marinas, ideal for outdoor adventures. Detroit, America’s Great Comeback City, is ready to roll.

Keep your eyes on the skies at the Michigan Science Center.

Sit and sip in the city’s cozy lounge at Kresge Court at the wonderfully eclectic Detroit Institute of the Arts. 

In 1904, Detroit opened the country’s first aquarium, Belle Isle Aquarium. Today, you can still see distant relatives of those first clownfish, seahorses, and electric eels. 

The Motown Museum will captivate music lovers, chronicling the influence of the label and its music on the culture and politics of its time. 

Go nautical with a boat ride on enchanting Lake St. Clair near Detroit’s east side in Macomb.

When to Go

Fall and spring are the best times to partake of Detroit’s wonders. Summer is hotter and more crowded, but equally appealing. The freeze hits Detroit during the winter, but the numerous museums, theatres and indoor cafes still offer a warm welcome.

Detroit is the only U.S. city from which Canada is visible to the south rather than the north.

There’s a salt mine 1,200 feet under the city, operated by the Detroit Salt Company, spread over 1,500 acres and 100 miles of road.

Detroit has the only floating post office in the country.
