About Kings Canyon National Park

Kings Canyon National Park proudly possesses the largest remaining grove of sequoia trees on the planet and a multitude of majestic mountains. The only thing more impressive than its towering trees and skyscraping peaks is the park’s plunging canyon.

Explore California

Overview

In this land of giants you can also descend more than a mile to the floor of glacier-carved Kings Canyon. However, Kings Canyon National Park is perhaps best known as the home of the thousands of years old General Grant Tree, located in aptly named Grant Grove, which is the second-largest sequoia on Earth, measuring almost 270 feet tall and 107 feet around at its base. The largest sequoia in the world, the General Sherman, is located in neighboring Sequoia National Park. According to world-renowned mountaineer, naturalist and author John Muir, aka “Father of the National Parks,” Kings Canyon is “a rival to Yosemite.”

What To Do

Conveniently located near the entrance of the park, Grant Grove is one of Kings Canyon’s most popular attractions, and is where you will find the General Grant Tree. In addition to the world’s second-largest sequoia, which is also a living shrine, Grant Grove is home to many other giant sequoias that can be seen via a series of trails that wind through the grove. Other must-see sights in the park include Zumwalt Meadow, a scenic alpine setting on the valley floor that is one of the park’s most peaceful and picturesque areas and the perfect vantage point for viewing its towering granite walls; and Kings Canyon Overlook, where you can take in truly awe-inspiring views of seemingly endless canyons, peaks and wilderness.

When to Go

The best time to visit Kings Canyon National Park is from June to September when the weather is best. If visiting during the winter to avoid the summer crowds, be aware that snow can fall heavily this time of year and snow chains might be required.
