About Flagstaff & Sedona
Explore Flagstaff & Sedona
Overview
Arizona’s tallest mountain, Native American history and cowboy culture mix with incredible pine forests and red rock scenery to make up Arizona’s magnificent north central Flagstaff and Sedona region.
Flagstaff lingers at 7,000 feet above sea level along historic Route 66, surrounded by the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in United States. A blanket of stars is visible from town or the Flagstaff’s renowned Lowell Observatory along Mars Hill Road.
As delightful as Flagstaff may be, it’s hard not to venture beyond its 12,633-foot Humphreys Peak to such otherworldly sites as the Grand Canyon or sublime red rock landscapes of Sedona, each merely an hour or so by car. Here, amidst ancient rouge-colored monoliths and fragrant pinion pines, vacationers will discover cowboys and wisdom seekers, tasty southwestern cuisine and sophisticated artworks.
Nothing on earth prepares you for the starry skies, majestic vistas and magical vortexes of Arizona’s spectacular desert southwest region of Flagstaff and Sedona.
What To Do
View some of the area’s most impressive sites on an adventurous jeep tour. Shop for art, clothing and southwest souvenirs at Sedona’s charming Tlaquepaque (pronounced T-la-keh-pah-keh) marketplace. Visit nearby Native American pueblo sites built right into the mountains at the Wupatki National Monument and Walnut Canyon National Monument. Explore intriguing landmarks in Flagstaff’s historic downtown area off Route 66. Hike or bike amid the town’s splendid San Francisco Peaks. Visit Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff and watch the stars shine. Or simply peer up at Sedona’s night sky, where a million twinkling stars light up the vast Arizona desert.
When to Go
Two types of people generally visit the American Southwest, those who love the heat and those who prefer milder temperatures. For the latter, the best time to visit Flagstaff and Sedona would be between March and May, when desert flowers are in full bloom; or fall, around mid-September to November, when temperatures range from the mid-60s F to the mid-80s F. Even during the winter, the weather is never too disagreeable; and snow sprinkled on red rocks and tall pines is an unforgettable sight.
