With its lush forests and untamed landscape, Huahine is Polynesia's best-kept secret. A deep, crystal-clear lagoon surrounds the two islands while magnificent bays and white-sand beaches add drama and solitude to their virtues. Huahine's few residents are warm, welcoming visitors with great kindness. With its rich and fertile soil, the island provides farmers bountiful harvests of vanilla, melons and bananas.

Overview

Plentiful crops of vanilla, bananas and melons grow in the fertile soil of Huahine, Polynesia’s spectacular two-island gem, conveniently connected via a narrow slice of land. A mere 40-minute flight from the island of Tahiti, Huahine feels worlds away. The slower pace of its small local populace, stunning bays and pristine white-sand beaches all contribute to Huahine’s title as Tahiti’s “best kept secret.” Eight small villages scattered throughout the island remind one of an earlier time. People still smile at each other and welcome guests into their hearts and homes. Located to the east of Raiatea, Tahiti’s lush volcanic islands of Huahine offer some of the best values in exquisite French Polynesia.

Its amazing scenery is also priceless. From the sugary white sand, swaying palms and baby blue waters of Fare Beach to the lush volcano, ancient ruins and fragrant vanilla plantations in its midst, Huahine offers stunning views around every turn.  Even the sacred blue-eyed eels are friendly, as they are fed and worshipped, and believed to be descendants of ancestors long gone.

What To Do

Discover ancient stone fish traps, a legacy and the sacred gathering spots known as marae in the traditional village of Maeva, northeast of Fare, near the Fa’una Nui lagoon. Visit the p?te’e (a house where sacred traditions were taught) displaying various archeological finds.

Get up close to the huge blue-eyed eels in Faie. Count the myriad shades of blue in the lagoon while you snorkel and explore Huahine’s colorful undersea world on a spectacular lagoon excursion. Learn about the island’s allure and legends during a 4WD excursion around the island.

Enjoy a range of land and sea activities such as hiking, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, and surfing amid the islands’ glorious scenery.

When to Go

The dry, sunny months of July through September are perfect for hiking, watersports and other activities on Huahine. May, June, and October also offer enjoyable weather; and November, the month of the Hawaiki Nui canoe race, is popular, as well. Average temperatures fall between 75 F and 90 F throughout the year, with the warmest months being November through May.

Fast Facts

Huahine means “pregnant woman” in Tahitian. The hills above the main village resemble a pregnant woman lying peacefully gazing up to the sky.

Villagers and adventurous vacationers feed the sacred blue-eyed eels, which the islanders believe embody the souls of their ancestors. These friendly eels range from three to six feet long and have adapted to humans after years of contact.

The ancient village of Maeva was the location of Huahine’s eight chieftainships and you’ll find ancient sacred communal spaces amid wild vanilla vines, breadfruit, banyan and other marvelous native flowers and trees.
