Dunedin is known as the "wildlife capital of New Zealand." Surrounded by lush green hills and located at the foot of the harbor, this region is comprised of stunning landscapes and unique wildlife such as the world’s smallest penguins, fur seals, or the northern royal albatross. This region is also rich in history, being designated as an UNESCO designated City of Literature and is considered one of the best-preserved cities of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Take time to visit Larnach Castle, the Olveston Historic Home, or the rare manuscript collections at the Reed and de Beer Galleries.
What to Do
- Olveston Historic Home: This 35-room mansion was built between 1904-1906. Furnished with antiques and artworks from around the world, Olveston stands as a time capsule of the era it was built.
- Larnach Castle: Built in 1871, Larnach stands as New Zealand’s only castle, and a historic time capsule of the wealthy Victorian lifestyle. This perch also offers stunning views of the Otago Peninsula.
- Tunnel Beach: Take the fenced path to the hand carved tunnel, created in the 1870s, to the beautiful, secluded beach with towering sea-carved sandstone cliffs, with rock arches and caves close by.
When to Go
The ideal travel season for Dunedin is within the summer months, December to February, with temperatures ranging from 52°F to 63°F. The weather is warm, and the days are longer, great conditions for Dunedin’s outdoor activities and beachside getaways. This is peak season however so expect crowds.
