Overview

Christchurch is located on the east coast, between Diamond Harbour and the Waimakariri River, with the Avon River flowing through its city center, proof that even in the city the outdoor activities are abundant. Walking and biking paths can be found throughout the Avon River’s banks, large open green spaces, and white-sand beaches line it’s eastern coastline. Also known for its modern city living, this city features a strong focus on the arts, with an abundant array of boutique galleries, museums, theater, architecture, and street art, with a fabulous culinary scene to nourish you as you explore.

What to Do

  • Christchurch Tram or Gondola: The tram and gondola are two of the city’s most beloved attractions anda prime way to move about the city, its popular sites, restaurants, shops, and museums. View Christchurch from above, in all its panoramic splendor or take it in from street level.
  • International Antarctic Centre: The International Antarctic Center brings immersive experiences of Antarctica to its visitors. Patrons are able to touch, feel, and interact with the unique wildlife, ecosystems, and scientific discoveries that make up Antarctica.
  • Art: Art is a dynamic focus for Christchurch, which is evident through their boutique galleries, museums, theater, street art, and urban art tours. Visitors can take time to visit one of the many museums or check out The Arts Center to discover local boutique galleries or performances.
  • TranzAlpine train: The TranzAlpine Train, and its Alpine Pacific Touring Route, runs from Christchurch to the West Coast, along the Southern Alps. This is a phenomenal way to view the local landscape, juxtaposing South Island’s lush and rugged alps, Canterbury plains, and western coastline.
