About Wellington
Explore North Island
Overview
Boasting nature preserves, creativity, wine trails, and exquisite cuisine, Wellington is bound to charm visitors of all types. Wellington is also considered a foodie capital, with several breweries, wineries, and top dining destinations to choose from. It has been estimated to contain more eateries and bars per capita than New York City.
What to Do
- Weta Workshop: Creative workshops that allow your imagination to run wild with movie sets, physical effects, make-up, and memorabilia. This community of artisans teach you all you need to know about movie magic.
- Outdoor sports & activities: biking, hiking, and kayaking can all be had in this dynamic capital city. Escarpment Track, the Southern Walkway Trail, nature reserve Zealandia, Wellington Lake, or the Remutaka Cycle Trail are all excellent examples, and come complete with stunning views.
- Wellington Cable Car: A bright red cable car taking passengers from the city center to the tip-top of the hillside. Once at the top, enjoy the botanical garden, Cable Car Museum, Space Place (at Carter Observatory) and Zealandia, or simply take in the stunning views.
- Bluebridge and the Interislander Ferries: Carry passengers and freight down the Cook Straight, sailing between New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Wellington’s ferry terminals serve as a gateway to South Island, and the 3 hour ferry ride is known to be one of the most stunning and scenic journeys in the world. Wairarapa and Hawkes' Bay are also a ferry-ride away from Wellington.
When to Go
The ideal travel season for Wellington is within the autumn shoulder season, between March and May. The weather is warm and lends itself to beautiful outdoor getaways, cable car journeys, or ferry rides to South Island. The city is also less crowded at this time. Wellington in the winter comes with low crowd levels but can be very cold with strong gusty winds.
