San Miguel de Allende

Located in the central highlands in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its baroque Spanish architecture, cobblestone streets, history, culture, cuisine, and arts scene. San Miguel de Allende has long been a haven for artists, ex-pats, and foodies, and more than once has been named the No. 1 city in the world.

What to See

The heart of San Miguel de Allende is the 17th-century Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. This iconic neo-Gothic church is one of the city’s top attractions and is renowned for its soaring pink spires and image of the Cristo de la Conquista (Christ of the Conquest). Other must-see sights include the picturesque and peaceful Parque Benito Juárez, a shady park replete with well-tended pathways and benches; Fábrica La Aurora, a renovated textile mill that today teems with antique shops, galleries, and artist studios; and Jardín, Allende, the city’s main plaza and garden oasis located across from Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

When to Go

The best time to visit San Miguel de Allende is during the dry season, November – April, which sees sunny skies and comfortable weather. If visiting for the famous Dia de los Muertos, plan your trip for October 31 to November 2, or for Fiestas Patrias, which celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day, September 15.
