Overview

Nearly nine million people call Mexico’s capital home. Originally known as Tenochtitlán, the city was built by the Aztecs in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco.

Mexico City’s historic center, or Zocalo, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It contains more museums than any other city in the world, including Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s original home.  The city’s Palacio Nacional holds murals painted by Kahlo’s husband, artist Diego Rivera.

Today, this City of Palaces remains on the cutting edge of the culinary and artistic worlds.

What To Do

Explore Mexico City's historic downtown area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its famous archaeological ruins of the Templo Mayor, (Main Temple), and religious buildings dating between the 16th and 19th centuries.

High on the list of must-see attractions is Constitution Square (Zocalo) with its impressive National Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral, Governmental Palace, and Merchants Portal.

See the major works at the Palace of Fine Arts. Visit Casa Azul, the Blue House, now a museum, where revered Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was born.

Discover the ancient Teotihuacan pyramids, also known as the City of the Gods and climb to the top of the Sun and Moon Pyramids. Visit the nearby village of Xochimilco, known for its colorful trajineras or boats that transport guests through expansive canals, passing serenading mariachis along the way.

When to Go

The best time to visit Mexico City is during springtime, from March to May, when you’ll be rewarded with beautiful weather. Winters, though less crowded with vacationers, can be chilly, and summers are often rainy.

Remember, Mexico City is nearly 7,382 feet above sea level, so start exploring slowly and allow enough time for your body to acclimate.
