Overview
Elciego is a picturesque stone village in the revered Rioja wine-production region. This jewel of the Basque Country is home to a cornucopia of wineries, and wine tasting is at the top of the list for many of its visitors.
What to see
Hotel Marqués de Riscal – A stunning creation of visionary architect Frank Gehry, Hotel Marqués de Riscal is a 21st-century chateau located next to the Marqués de Riscal Winery. The hotel is also home to a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Church of San Andres – This historic 16th-century stone church dominates the Elciego skyline and is located near the Hotel Marqués de Riscal.
Bodegas Valdelana – This family-owned, award-winning winery has been making wine for 14 generations in Elciego. Bodegas Valdelana features a wine cellar dating back to the 15th century and a museum.
When to Go
The best time to visit Elciego is shoulder season, approximately April through mid-June and September through October, in order to avoid the summer crowds.
