Explore Spain

Overview

Sporting more than 50 scenic golf courses, a spirited nightlife, and oceans of charm, Costa del Sol provides plenty of adventure for those looking for a little action with their sunbathing. This vibrant Andalusian region of Spain offers a lively art scene, excellent vineyards and restaurants, shopping for locally made handicrafts and luxurious designer goods, and exquisite natural beauty.

A stroll through Estepona offers a glimpse into this artistic city, with its vivid murals and colorful Plaza de las Flores. Inland, the Malaga province is home to the region’s most stunning white-washed villages, such as Frigiliana, set amid the spectacular scenery of Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, lined with Spanish fir trees, waterfalls, and wildlife including wild goats and deer.

The town of Marbella, best known for its well-heeled visitors and plush resorts, defines the Costa del Sol’s glamorous appeal.  Edged by pristine beaches, Marbella is a haven of relaxation and luxurious indulgence, featuring beautiful resorts, an array of thalassotherapy spas and numerous golf courses.

What To Do

Explore the forests and wildlife of Malaga’s immense Natural Park Sierra de las Nieves, which was declared a national game reserve in 1972. Roam the narrow, flower-lined streets and charming white-washed buildings of Frigiliana in Malaga. Soak up the sun along the Costa del Sol’s salty Mediterranean seas and learn to fish like a local.

Visit the Picasso Museum in Malaga City. Hike to the remains of an Arab castle in Casarabonela and 16th-century watchtower in the heart of Malaga’s marvelous Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. Feast on golden paella, a well-loved Spanish rice dish made with an assortment of meats or seafood and tinted with saffron.

Stroll through the once sleepy fishing village of Nerja, where you can sunbathe and explore the charming castle, church, shops, cafes, and miles of sun-drenched coastline. Take a day trip to the Rock of Gibraltar and visit Saint Michael’s Caves, a natural grotto turned concert venue, friendly pubs and charming boutiques of this British colony.

When to Go

May is the perfect time to visit the Costa del Sol when the crowds are thinner, and the weather is just right. Warm sea breezes blow throughout the summer, giving the region the nickname, Costa del Viento (windy coast). Summertime is the perfect season for sunbathing and sightseeing, with little or no rain. The majority of rainfall occurs from October to March.

Fast Facts

In 2012, the town of Estepona commissioned artists to paint elaborate murals on the sides of its charming whitewashed buildings. Some of their incredible artwork includes La Venus, based on the town’s historic La Venus de Estepona, Aires de Música, marking the Estepona Symphony Orchestra’s 75th anniversary, and the mural, Día de Pesca, painted across six different apartment walls to commemorate the importance of fishing in this region.

The Andalucia region and Costa del Sol offers a paradise of culinary riches. It is one of Spain’s most important wine regions with myriad hilltop vineyards.
