About Monaco

Despite its diminutive size, Monaco, the second-smallest independent country in the world after Vatican City, is one of the wealthiest countries on Earth. This glamorous city-state on the French Riviera is also renowned for its luxury, casinos, and panoramic Mediterranean views.

Overview

Monaco is most famous as the home of Monte Carlo, known across the globe for its upscale hotels, superyachts, and casinos, particularly the iconic Belle Époque Casino de Monte-Carlo, a worldwide symbol of wealth and glamour. Monte Carlo is also famed for its high-end shopping, fine dining, luxury marina, jazz festivals, eclectic museums, opera, and the Monaco Grand Prix, a Formula 1 race that runs through the city streets. Monaco-Ville, the historic heart of Monaco, boasts narrow cobblestone streets, charming squares, and some of the principality's most famous landmarks.

What To Do

Home of the Grimaldi family since the 13th century, Prince's Palace, which sits atop old town and is the official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, features awe-inspiring city and harbor views, as well as the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony. The world-renowned Oceanographic Museum, dramatically located on a cliff overlooking the sea in Monaco-Ville, features Mediterranean and tropical marine ecosystems with thousands of marine animals. Saint Nicholas Cathedral, aka the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate, is the burial site of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace (Grace Kelly). Monaco's main harbor, Port Hercule, is overflowing with luxury yachts and is one of the main locations for the Monaco Grand Prix. Larvotto Beach, Monaco's most popular beach located along Avenue Princesse Grace, is lined with cafés, bars, and restaurants.

When to Go

The best time to visit Monaco is April to June and September to October when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are fewer than the peak summer season. If visiting for the Monaco Grand Prix, plan your visit during the first full weekend in June.
