In addition to being the birthplace of Luciano Pavarotti, Modena is known for its auto industry, and is also the birthplace of Ferrari and the headquarters of Maserati. This Emilia-Romagna region city is also world-famous for balsamic vinegar, which originated in the area and has an incomparable taste. Medieval Modena’s must-see sight is the Piazza Grande, where you will find the 12th-century cathedral and Torre Civica, which together comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What to see
Enzo Ferrari Museum - Located on the site of the birthplace of the legendary Ferrari’s founder, this informative museum consists of exhibitions about the life of Enzo Ferrari and his world-famous cars. Considered one of the best car museums in Italy, it is a must-see for Ferrari lovers.
Ducal Palace – This immense Baroque palace was once the residence of the Este Dukes of Modena and today houses the Italian Military Academy.
Maserati Factory – Tour the Maserati Factory, which includes a visit to the showroom, assembly line, and Maserati store.
When to Go
The best time to visit Modena is shoulder season, between April and June and September through October, when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer visitors. Summer months can be hot, humid and overcrowded.
