Explore Europe
Overview
Urban culture and nature collide in Helsinki. This green city is overflowing with open spaces and renowned for its world-class architecture and design. In fact, in 2012, Helsinki was designated the World Design Capital. Historic Helsinki is home to the 18th-century fortress of Sveaborg, located on the fortified islands of Suomenlinna; and Uspenski Cathedral, which is the largest orthodox church in Western Europe. Modern Helsinki boasts the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. Helsinki is also where visitors will find one of the world’s oldest zoos, Korkeasaari Zoo.
What to See
Market Square (Kauppatori) – Helsinki’s main square is home to one of the most renowned outdoor markets in northern Europe. Here you will find a cornucopia of Finnish food, fish, fruits and vegetables, souvenirs, and cafés.
Temppeliaukio Church – This iconic church is built directly into solid rock, which is why it is also known as Rock Church. Temppeliaukio is one of Helsinki’s most unique and visited attractions.
Seurasaari Open-Air Museum – Located on the island of Seurasaari, this open-air museum allows guests to see how Finns lived before modern times. It features buildings from different regions of Finland that give an overall view of life in the Finnish countryside from the 18th to 20th century.
Linnanmäki Amusement Park – Finland’s oldest and most popular amusement park is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. It boasts more than 40 rides as well as restaurants and cafés.
Helsinki Olympic Stadium – See where the Summer Olympics were held in 1952, where you will also find the Finnish sports museum, TAHTO. Today the stadium is home of the Finland national football team.
Kallio
The bohemian Kallio district is one of the hippest areas of Helsinki. Laid-back Kallio is home to a plethora of trendy bars, boutiques, restaurants, cafés, and Finnish saunas.
When to Go
The best time to visit Helsinki is during the summer months when the weather is the warmest. Keep in mind that due to its far-north location, Helsinki sees 19 hours of daylight in June, more than 18 in July, and almost 16 in August. If coming for the world-famous urban music and arts Flow Festival, plan to visit in August.
