About Greece

Considered the Cradle of Western Civilization, Greece also offers plenty of modern pleasures and diversions, from sunbathing, diving, and kite surfing to shopping, swimming, and dancing the night away.

As the sun sets over the islands, sweet bouzouki music fills the air. You’ll find yourself swept away by the country’s mythical past as you gaze upon vast seas once sailed by legendary Greek heroes, while ancient gods and goddesses cheered them on.

Explore Greece

Overview

Europe’s sunniest country also holds some of the world’s most mysterious myths and legendary figures. With an area extending just over 50,000 square miles, Greece encompasses nearly three thousand islands, only 130 of which are inhabited.  These ancient isles are scattered across the sparkling Aegean and Ionian seas.

The world’s first Olympics Games were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC, and the most recent games took place in 2004.

History buffs will find 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites scattered across these sun-swept isles, including the ancient Temple of Apollo, the mystical archaeological site of Delphi, and iconic Acropolis at Athens.

What To Do

Tour the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Temple of Zeus in Athens.

Hike to the top of Mt. Ida, mythical home to Zeus on the island of Crete.

Take a day-trip from Mykonos to the uninhabited island of Delos, the legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

Watch the skies transform into a blaze of color as you watch the sun slip across the horizon from atop a hillside in Oia.

Bask in the sunshine on the fabled beaches of Paros, Naxos or Costa Navarino.

Gaze upon endless azure seas, sipping sweet ouzo while enjoying a snack of dolmades or creamy chickpea hummus. With such close access to the sea, when in Greece be sure to indulge in some of the region’s delectable array of fresh seafood.

In Greece, no matter what sort of holiday catches your fancy, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

When to Go

The sun shines brightly on these ancient isles for more than 250 days per year. The best time to visit Greece is during spring and early summer, or fall when the temperatures are milder.

Summer is always popular with students and vacationers, who often love to sunbathe and party the night away.

Fast Facts

There are more daily newspapers in Athens than any other European city.

98% of citizens are Greek Orthodox.

Of the country’s 11 million citizens, call Athens home.

The favorite fast food on these islands, and around the world, is Greek souvlaki, made from meat, wrapped in pita bread.

Several of the Greek islands include verdant forests and even waterfalls.
