About Reims

The unofficial capital of the Champagne wine-growing region is bursting with vineyards and Champagne houses and is an official capital of culture, tastings and gastronomy. Reims, aka the Champagne and Coronation city, also has a rich history and for centuries France’s kings were crowned in its majestic cathedral, which is one of four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city.

Overview

Reims is also home to historically significant Roman ruins, including Mars Gate. Also known as Porte de Mars, this must-see 3rd-century site was the widest triumphal arch in the Roman world. And because Reims is world-renowned for Champagne, no trip is complete without visiting a vineyard and one or more of the city’s Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot whose cellars are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What To Do

Reims Cathedral ? The Cathedral of Notre-Dame at Reims was the site of numerous coronations of French kings, including Charles VII in the presence of Joan of Arc. This masterpiece of Gothic architecture, which has more than 2,300 statues, draws visitors from around the globe.

Palais du Tau ? Another Reims UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Palais du Tau is the former residence of the Archbishop of Reims and the place of residence of French kings before their coronation. Today, the Palais du Tau is a museum exhibiting historical artefacts, including the 9th-century talisman of Charlemagne.

Automobile Museum Reims-Champagne ? Home to the fifth-largest vehicle collection in France, here you will find 160 exceptional cars, 90 rare motorcycles and 7,000 miniature cars, trucks and machines.

When to Go

The best time to visit Reims is in shoulder season, April through mid-June, before the summer tourists crowd the streets. September is also a great time to visit as it is grape harvest time, which includes many special events and tours.
