Explore England

Overview

York is known as Britain's home of chocolate, the most haunted city in Europe, and houses one of the best racecourses in the country. There are multiple historic sites to visit when in the area, such as the York Minster cathedral, Clifford’s Tower, Shambles Street, and several museums. Food and beverages to try while in York would be Yorkshire pudding, cheese, rhubarb, curd tart, cream tea, and their local brew.

What to Do

  • York Minster: This 13th-century Gothic cathedral is the biggest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe.
  • City Walls: Built 900 years ago to protect the city. Much of those walls are still standing and visitors can walk them all the way round. This is a great activity for all ages, helping to navigate the city, discover the history, and they provide some of the greatest views.
  • Clifford’s Tower: This tower is what remains of what once was York Castle. At one point, this was the center of government for North England. Take a tour, climb to the top, or walk the grounds.
  • Shambles: A narrow street that dates back to the Middle Ages. Take in the history, the local shops, bakeries, and restaurants.
  • Ghost Tours: York is rumored to be the most haunted destination in Europe so why not embrace it. Find a ghost tour, learn the history, and connect with York’s ancestors.

When to Go

York regularly has a temperate climate, where the summers stay mild, but the winters get chilly, with rainfall occurring throughout the year. May – September brings the most favorable weather, with highs reaching 61°F. July and August is peak tourist season for York however, and the crowds can be cumbersome. York is also widely known as the city of festivals, so the yearly events and activities are plentiful, with the York Christmas Festival being one of their biggest.
