About Split

As the second-largest Croatian city, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this “Jewel of an Empire” offers all the ingredients for an idyllic vacation. Coastal Split is a gateway to islands with rolling terrain leading to pebbly beaches and turquoise waters. The sunshine is nearly always in season here.

What To See

Diocletian Palace. Created in the 4th-century, this Emperor’s Palace was once a fortress, royal home and protected city. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient Roman ruin is bustling with bars, restaurants and shops.

Klis Fortress. Towering over Split, on a limestone cliff, this is a must-see for its amazing views. Appealing to history buffs and “Game of Thrones” fans alike, this 2nd-century castle experienced real-life tragic attacks and was one of the main fortresses on the show. Among the ruins, tour the artifacts exhibits showcasing soldier uniforms and ancient weapons.

Split Old Town. Stroll back in time on medieval cobblestone streets and a maze of alleyways leading to modern restaurants, bars and hotels.

Marjan Forest Park. Explore old cave dwellings, small stone churches and captivating lookouts. Ascend about 300 stairs to reach the highest point on the hilltop.

Cathedral of St. Domnius. Travelers flock to this former mausoleum, created in 311, to witness some of the world’s best-preserved examples of Roman Architecture and magnificent views atop the bell tower.

Hvar Island. Claimed to be the sunniest spot in all of Europe, and “Queen of the Dalmation islands”, this offers the beauty of Mediterranean beaches with less crowds of more well-known destinations. Come evening, find nightlife and entertainment in the cosmopolitan town of Hvar.

When to Go

Peak season is July and August when Split is the busiest with island and beach tourism, and temperatures average in the 80s. The Adriatic Sea is warm enough for swimming and strong winds make for great sailing in May, June and September.
