What To See
Atomium and Mini-Europe – It’s hard to miss the Atomium, a giant metal model of an iron crystal that rises nearly 350 feet in the air. Constructed in 1958 as the centerpiece of Brussels’ World Fair, this impressively shiny building houses historical and cultural exhibits. If you’re overwhelmed, don’t worry - close by you’ll find Mini-Europe, where famous European cities are reproduced in painstakingly tiny detail.
Mannekin Pis – Even if you don’t speak Dutch, you might guess what this fountain commemorates. Brussels’ most famous statue, yes, pees continuously into a basin below, but that’s not the main attraction. Instead, it’s his impeccable sense of style – the statue changes outfits throughout the year, from the practical to the whimsical.
Comic Strip Route – The people of Brussels consider their city the home of the comic strip. To celebrate, giant, colorful murals cover the sides of buildings, depicting some of Belgium’s most famous characters. Grab a map and make your way around the city for some larger than life heroes.
Old England Building – This stunning Art Nouveau building is a landmark on its own, but inside you’ll find the Musical Instruments Museum. Over 8,000 historical and modern instruments are housed here, and you’ll find plenty of weird and wonderful music makers inside.
When to Go
Weather is pleasant year round, with warm summers and moderately chilly winters. You’re more likely to find clear skies than clouds, but pack for rain no matter when you go – you won’t want to be stuck indoors! Like many cities in Europe, Brussels lights up with an exquisite Christmas Market, full of entertainment, shopping and dining for young and old.
