About Antwerp

Historic Antwerp, located in the Flanders Region of Belgium, dates to the 4th-century AD. Allegedly, the first diamond was cut in Antwerp in 1476. Today, it is the undisputed diamond capital of the world, as more than 80% of the planet's rough diamonds pass through this port city. In addition to diamonds, Antwerp is known for its world-class museums, including the Rubens House, the former home of artist Peter Paul Rubens.

Overview

Antwerp has long been a cosmopolitan blend of culture, art, fashion, food, and entertainment. Antwerp is the true definition of old world meets new. It is modern and industrial while also maintaining its historic architecture and art. A vibrant dining culture and nightlife also thrives throughout the city, with several Michelin-starred restaurants.

What to See

Grote Markt – Grote Markt is the busiest and primary town square in Antwerp. Full of historic architecture, the square is lined with 16th-century guild houses, City Hall (built between 1561-1565) and the Brabo Fountain (built in 1887).

Het Steen Castle – One of Antwerp’s oldest structures, built between 1200 and 1225, this castle was once part of a protective fortress and walled-in city. Take a moment to walk around the cobblestone pathways or along the banks of the Scheldt River. The Antwerp Ferris Wheel, “The View,” can also be accessed nearby.

Cathedral of Our Lady – This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest Gothic church of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. It is also home to a world-class art collection, including four paintings by Rubens.

Museum Plantin-Moretus – This one-of-a-kind museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the world's oldest printing press and priceless manuscripts. It is also the only museum on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

When to Go

Peak season for Antwerp is primarily May-September, due to its long days and warmer temperatures. Antwerp is known for its cold winters, where temperatures can dip down to freezing, making December-February a more challenging time to travel. Antwerp is also known for its winter festivals and Christmas markets, so it may be worth bundling up for. Another popular cultural festival in Antwerp is the Ommegang Festival, which occurs on the first Thursday of July.
