Overview
Roatan is blessed with pristine white-sand beaches, jungle-clad mountain peaks, dynamic coral reefs, and world-class diving and snorkeling. Some of the island’s must-see sights include West Bay Beach, which is ideal for swimming and snorkeling; Gumbalimba Park, an eco-adventure and history park; Punta Gorda, the oldest permanent settlement in Roatan; Oak Ridge, a small seaside community known for its colorful boat houses on stilts; and Arch’s Iguana & Marine Park, home to more than 4,000 iguanas, as well as Capuchin Monkeys, Scarlet Macaws, and Amazon Parrots.
What to See
West Bay Beach – Home to the island’s major resorts, West Bay is widely considered Roatan’s best beach and a mecca for diving and snorkeling, due to its calm, crystal-clear water.
Gumbalimba Park – Aka “The Untamed Roatan,” Gumbalimba Park is home to free-roaming macaws, white-face monkeys, and native iguanas. Here you will also find a museum, pool, botanical gardens, animal interaction center, and a waterfront.
Oak Ridge – Often referred to as “The Venice of Roatan” because of its canals, secluded Oak Ridge is a charming seaside village famed for its vivid boat houses. Oak Ridge is the ideal daytrip from anywhere on the island.
When to Go
The best time to visit Roatan is during spring, when the weather is the most ideal. Keep in mind that the rainy and hurricane season begins in August.
