Guatemala is Central America’s most populous country and the birthplace of the ancient Maya. Guatemala is home to a myriad of Mayan ruins including renowned Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Central America. Other must-see sights in Guatemala include Antigua Guatemala, one of the country’s best preserved and beautiful Spanish colonial cities; Lake Atitlán, which lies in a volcanic crater and is often referred to as one of the world’s most beautiful lakes; Pacaya Volcano, which has been continuously active since 1975; and Semuc Champey, a stunning series of natural stepped pools.
What to See
Tikal National Park – Located in the heart of the jungle, Tikal is one of the most significant sites of Mayan civilization. Inhabited from the 6th century B.C. to the 10th century A.D., it contains thousands of architectural and artistic remains and is one of the few World Heritage properties inscribed according to both natural and cultural criteria for its extraordinary biodiversity and archaeological importance.
Lake Atitlán – Located in Guatemala’s southwestern highlands, this breathtaking lake is surrounded by verdant hills, volcanoes, and Mayan villages. Lake Atitlán was nominated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is one of the most-visited places in Guatemala.
Antigua Guatemala – Famed for its Spanish colonial architecture, Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of Guatemala. It is home to the Catedral de Santiago as well as the Pacaya Volcano.
Guatemala City – Discover Guatemala’s history via sightseeing in the Centro Histórico of the modern capital. Here you will find the National Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral, Miraflores Museum, and Mapa en Relieve, a large 3D replica of Guatemala’s terrain.
When to Go
The best time to visit Guatemala is during the dry season, November-April, so as to better enjoy the outdoor destinations such as Tikal and Lake Atitlán. If visiting for venerated Semana Santa (Holy Week), plan your trip to Guatemala for the week leading up to Easter Sunday.
