About Kingston
Explore Jamaica
Overview
Kingston isn’t all about reggae; it is also the island’s premier destination for culture and cuisine, from colonial-era architecture and fine-art galleries to colorful markets and eclectic eateries. Kingston is also home to Jamaica’s primary port; in fact, it is the world’s 7th-largest natural harbor. The breathtaking Blue Mountains loom large over the city and are a great retreat from chaotic Kingston. Jamaica’s longest mountain range is home to tropical forest, waterfalls, coffee plantations and the island’s highest point, Blue Mountain Peak.
What To Do
Must-see attractions in Kingston include Devon House, a colonial-era mansion that also has shops, restaurants and an ice-cream parlor; Tuff Gong Recording Studios, where reggae’s greatest artists have recorded and where you can take Bob Marley’s “Making of the Music” tour, a behind-the-scenes look at the record-making process; and Port Royal, once known as “the wickedest city on Earth,” where you can explore Jamaica’s pirate past at the mouth of Kingston Harbor.
When to Go
The best time to visit Kingston is from November to mid-December, when the weather is most pleasant and hurricane season is over. If you’re coming to Jamaica for Carnival, one of the biggest parties in the Caribbean, plan your visit for Easter week.
