About Tasmania
Explore Tasmania
Overview
Its capital city, Hobart, contains approximately half of Tasmania’s population and has an enviable farm-to-table food and wine scene. Historic Launceston, the third oldest city in Australia, is the gateway to Cataract Gorge, one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations. Some of Tasmania’s top attractions include Freycinet National Park, best known for awe-inspiring Wineglass Bay; Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, a place of astounding natural beauty in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area; and Mt. Wellington, which overlooks Hobart and affords panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.
When to Go
The best time to visit Tasmania is spring and autumn when the weather is mild and pleasant and the crowds fewer. Keep in mind that Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so spring is September to November and autumn is March to May.
