About Darwin

Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, is where ancient Aboriginal culture mixes with modern city life.

Explore Northern Territory

Overview

Darwin is the gateway to Kakadu National Park, one of the largest national parks in Australia and a biodiverse nature reserve of wetlands, waterfalls, rivers and thousands of plant species. In town, visitors will find a cornucopia of eclectic eateries, outdoor markets, waterside attractions, and a year-round tropical climate. Some of the city’s top attractions include the Darwin Waterfront Precinct, which boasts a wave lagoon, landscaped gardens, restaurants, bars, and cafés; Crocosaurus Cove, home to the largest saltwater crocodiles in Australia and the world’s largest display of Australian reptiles; and the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, which features an array of food, arts and crafts, Aboriginal artefacts, and more.

When to Go

The best time to visit Darwin is spring and autumn when the weather is mild and pleasant and the crowds fewer. Keep in mind that Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so spring is September to November and autumn is March to May.

Darwin Waterfront Precinct

The lively Darwin Waterfront Precinct has a cornucopia of restaurants, shops, cafes, bars, lush parklands, a wave pool, and the city's only man-made beach.
