About Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung is located at the southern end of Taiwan, near the bay, with the city and harbor serving as its primary port. Originally founded as a small trading village in the 17th century, it now stands as Tawain’s third largest city.

Overview

Due to its rich history, Kaohsiung is known as Taiwan’s center for cultural and historical significance. Like Taipei, public transportation is extremely convenient, fast, and covers most of the city. Travelers can even board the high-speed rail from Taipei and make it to Kaohsiung in two hours or take the ferries to the island of their choice.

What to Do

Island Hopping:  Several islands await exploration from Kaohsiung and ferries run consistently out of the Gushan Ferry Pier. Both Cijin and Xiaoliuqiu make for excellent island-hopping day trips. Once you arrive, rent a bike, scooter, or walk to explore the island further.

Liuhe Tourist Night Market: This market is considered a must when visiting Kaohsiung. It comes alive at night and is a great stop for dinner, beverages (a papaya milk comes highly recommended), snacks, or late-night entertainment.

Fo Guang Shan Monastery: Taiwan’s largest Buddhist monastery consists of four temples and 480 standing Buddha’s, serenely wrapped in a vivid landscape of water, trees, and mountainous terrain. It is a culturally stunning site to be seen and photographed.

Lotus Pond: Located on the northern edge of the city, the lake serves as a serene escape and is known for its large collection of temples. The Confucius Temple can also be found nearby, as well as the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, Spring and Autumn Pavilions, and the ruins of the Fengshan County walls and gates.

When to Go

October–November is an ideal time to travel to Taiwan in general. The further south you travel, however, the more temperatures are known to stay consistently pleasant throughout the year. The rainiest months for Kaohsiung are usually June–August, with occasional monsoons. Winter-spring is a great time to visit due to outdoor activities and popular Taiwanese festivals.
