Explore South Korea

Overview

This modern metropolis is home to not only towering skyscrapers and technology giants, but ancient Buddhist temples and palaces, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here you will find the futuristic, such as the otherworldly Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and the historic, including Jogyesa Temple which dates to the 14th century. Other must-see sights in Seoul include Gyeongbokgung Palace, the royal palace of the Joseon dynasty built in 1395; Bukchon Hanok Village, which contains a plethora of restored traditional Korean houses; the N Seoul Tower, a landmark rising more than 770 feet; and the War Memorial of Korea.

What to See

Gyeongbokgung Palace – This iconic palace was built in 1395 and served as the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty. Here you will also find the National Folk Museum and National Palace Museum.

Bukchon Hanok Village – Take a step back in time and see the Seoul of yore. Bukchon Hanok Village features hundreds of traditional Korean houses, or hanok, that have been meticulously restored and allow you to immerse yourself in Korean culture.

N Seoul Tower – This symbol of the city, aka Namsan Tower, soars over Seoul and offers 360-degree views of the city. It is one of Seoul’s top attractions, for both visitors and locals.

War Memorial of Korea – This expansive museum exhibits and preserves materials related to the Korean War, including maps, military equipment, uniforms, battle records and more. Its memorial walkway is inscribed with the names of every casualty from the allied forces.

Gangnam-gu

This modern, hip section of Seoul is the birthplace of world-renowned Gangnam Style. A stronghold of K-culture, Gangnam-gu is also home to a cornucopia of upscale eateries, trendy nightclubs, and designer shopping.

When to Go

The best time to visit Seoul is during spring, April-June, and fall, September-November, which are typically sunny and dry with pleasant temperatures. If visiting for the annual Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival, plan your visit for late March.
