About Java
Explore Java
Overview
Despite its dense population, there is still ample opportunity to get away from it all on Java, particularly at Ujung Kulon National Park, which includes the Krakatoa Archipelago. The 466-square-mile park is a haven for the Javan rhinoceros, which is critically endangered, as well as almost 60 rare species of plant and 35 mammal species. Java is a treasure trove of temples, including venerated Prambanan, an ancient Hindu temple compound considered to be the most beautiful in all of Indonesia. History also abounds in Jakarta, home to Kota Tua, the city’s old town which is brimming with Dutch colonial-era buildings.
What To Do
Ujung Kulon National Park, located at the westernmost tip of Java, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains the largest remaining lowland rainforests in the island’s plain and is the last refuge of the Javan rhinoceros. It is also one of Earth’s most pristine natural ecosystems. Other must-see attractions on Java include Kota Tua, aka Old Batavia, in Jakarta, which is the original downtown area of the Indonesian capital where you will find 17th-century colonial-style Dutch buildings, the History of Jakarta Museum and a cornucopia of cafés and art galleries; and Prambanan, a stunning centuries-old Hindu temple compound that is the largest in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When to Go
The best time to visit Java is during its dry season, from May through October. However, if you want to catch the annual Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, one of the largest in the world, plan your trip for early March.
