Overview

This multicultural archipelago nation is also the fourth-most populous country on the planet and is renowned for its variety of ethnic and religious groups, which is why Indonesia’s motto is “Unity in Diversity.” Its islands are dotted with Hindu and Buddhist temples, as well as Christian churches and Muslim mosques. Here you will find the “Island of the Gods,” aka Bali; world-famous surf breaks, such as Uluwatu; Mount Leuser National Park, the only habitat where elephants, tigers, rhinos and orangutans live together; and Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake. In addition to Bali, some of Indonesia’s top destinations include its island neighbor Lombok, the province of North Sumatra, and Java, home to the nation’s capital and largest city, Jakarta.

What To Do

Bali – One of the most desirable destinations on Earth, Bali is renowned for its photogenic beaches, resplendent rice paddies, volcanic mountains, and friendly people. The “Island of the Gods” is also home to more than 10,000 temples.

Lombok – While not as famous as its neighbor Bali, Lombok has beaches that rival Bali’s and are much less crowded. Lombok is also where you will find Mount Rinjani, an active volcano whose caldera contains a heavenly crater lake.

Java – The island of Java contains not only Jakarta, Indonesia’s biggest city, but Ujung Kulon National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a refuge for the rare and critically endangered Javan rhinoceros and also includes Krakatoa, where one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in human history occurred.

North Sumatra – This province on the island of Sumatra is where you will find Lake Toba, the planet’s largest volcanic lake which is also the biggest lake in Indonesia, and Mount Leuser National Park, a peaceful habitat where elephants, tigers, rhinos and orangutans live together.

When to Go

Due to its equatorial location, Indonesia tends to be warm year-round. However, November to March is the rainy season, so the best time to visit is during the dry season, April through October.
