Reno is also known as the “Gateway to Nevada Adventure.” With a bevy of man-made and natural attractions plus Tahoe’s mountain resorts less than an hour away, skiers, hikers, and nature lovers will find plenty to do all year round.
Those who opt to remain in Reno can spend time outside the casinos at such enticing spots as the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, The National Auto Museum and The Nevada Museum of Art.
With any luck, some of your favorite entertainers will be in town performing at a local club or casino. Plus, the weather’s usually in your favor, with 300 glorious days of sunshine per year.
What To Do
Take a walk along the Truckee River in downtown Reno and visit a few of the local museums, such as the renowned Nevada Museum of Art, the state’s only nationally accredited museum, and the National Auto Museum considered one of the country’s ten best automotive showcases.
Go rock climbing up the tallest wall on the planet (164 feet high) in downtown Reno at BaseCamp. Or head to the Donner/Tahoe area and do some social climbing in the great outdoors.
Kayak at Reno’s Truckee River Whitewater Park amid the lively downtown hotel-casino and art district. Experience the thrill of white water rafting along the sublime Truckee River.
There’s plenty to keep you occupied after the sun goes down, from entertaining musical and theatrical performances to casinos and western-themed bars.
When to Go
The weather favors Reno with 300 days of sunshine per year. Sitting in the shadows of the Sierra Nevadas, the city also receives an annual rainfall of around 7.5 inches. The region remains mostly dry between April and the end of October. Summer brings temperatures into the mid-80s F, while winter offers an average low of around 50 F, sometimes colder. Snow falls from November through March, and even longer in nearby Tahoe.
Getting Around
Mark Twain worked as a reporter for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, near Reno, before he started writing novels.
Reno’s first hotel was built in the 1850s. The town became known as Reno for Union General Jesse Reno in 1868.
