Overview
Lake Tahoe’s idyllic 72 miles of coastline straddles the breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains of both California and Nevada. The area includes the friendly shores and sparkling casinos of South Lake Tahoe, as well as the stunning beaches, forests and towns, such as charming Tahoe City, to the west.
Ski havens such as Heavenly and Squaw Valley lie to the north, as well as the former logging town of Truckee, with its majestic river, ideal for tubing and white water rafting. Paddle boarding amid a backdrop of pine rimmed mountains, swimming, and sailing are perfect summertime activities around Lake Tahoe.
The skies light up with fireworks during the festive 4th of July, as vacationers enjoy all the area has to offer, from shopping and dining to hiking, casinos and more.
Winter comes early to these mountains, and sometime stays until May. The region transforms itself into a mecca for skiers during the lengthy winter season and boasts the largest concentration of ski resorts in North America.
During the rest of the year, prime locales such as Eagle Falls and Emerald Bay State Park beckon nature-loving vacationers from across the globe.
What To Do
Experience Shakespeare on the lake at the Sand Harbor State Park amphitheater during July and August.
Try your luck at one of the area’s numerous casinos, or press your luck skiing down one of the Tahoe’s challenging slopes.
Ride a paddle wheeler or yacht through the sparkling blue-green waters of Lake Tahoe.
Visit exquisite Emerald Bay, carved by glaciers millions of years ago.
Hike down the mountain to Vikingsholm, one of the country’s finest examples of Scandinavian architecture, constructed by 200 workers for Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight in 1929.

When to Go
Depending on your particular interests, any time of year is the perfect time to visit Lake Tahoe.
Summertime is busiest, when temperatures max out at 77 F, ideal for nature lovers, hikers and families to soak in the epic scenery. Winter appeals to skiers and snowboarders of every ability. During the winter, it gets cold, with lows around 20 F and plenty of snowfall.
Regardless of the temperature, the sun shines year round on the lake.

Lake Tahoe sits at 6,200 feet above sea level, higher than any other lake of its size in the United States.
Tiny Fannette Island is Lake Tahoe’s only island.
